Simple Summer Pasta Marinara

summer_marinara_a_house_in_the_hills-6

I know what you’re thinking- too simple to be a recipe.  But, and this is a big BUT, this sauce is incredible. Really, spectacularly good.  Add all of this confirms my belief that simple food is the best food anyway.  If you’re going to eat pasta this summer, which I can’t think of a single reason why you wouldn’t, then this is the way to do it!  Three cheers to tomato season!  xx- Sarah

I don’t know what it’s like where you are but it’s H-O-T here in the desert!  And these mango cilantro mojitos are EXACTLY what I need to cool off.  So refreshing, so summery, so perfectly tasty and great!  I can’t get enough of them.  Well, technically I suppose I CAN, but I don’t want to!  New favorite mojito for sure!  I hope you love them as much as I do.  xx- Sarah   {Recipe and photos produced in collaboration with Sarah Dickenson for A House in the Hills}

INSPIRING SPACES

TDF_Tennyson_St135852

I’ve got a little bit of home inspiration for you today that has me wishing we had ten more rooms in this house!  We’re nearing the end of our decorating and it makes me a little crazy.  Which is a sickness, I totally recognize that I promise!  I know I should just live in the absolute happiness that I adore our home (AND I DO!).  But I also think things like “wouldn’t be amazing to live in a mid century house with a white brick wall and a fireplace?” and “wouldn’t it be incredible to have a long farm-style dining table for entertaining?”  I suppose it’s how I feel about dogs- I could weep that I’ll never be able to have all of the types and personalities of dogs that I want.  Same-same for homes and decor.  Such is life, right?!   Too little time here on this earth, too much goodness to be had…. Hope you find these homes as day-dream inspiring as I do!  xx- Sarah

Earth to Echo X Jim Denevan

earth_to_echo_a_house_in_the_hills-1

When I was a kid movies like “Flight of the Navigator”, “The Goonies” and “Stand by Me” shaped my childhood with stories of adventure and wonder.  I remember leaving theaters with my imagination running wild, feeling tangible jealousy that the children in the movie got to experience such incredible things, filled with hope that I might someday have a grand adventure of my own!  I can still recall so many of the details of those movies even though it’s been YEARS since I’ve watched any of them, I can still remember so vividly the EXCITEMENT! That’s part of the brilliance of the movies that you love as a child isn’t it, that you carry them with you forever?!

I was so happy to learn about Earth to Echo, a movie by Relativity Media that caters to that same sense of childhood imagination, that tells the story of kids who discover an adorable little alien that needs their help to return home- exactly the kind of story I LIVED for as a child!  This movie will thrill and stoke the imagination of this generation, and I couldn’t be happier for all the kids (and parents) who will leave theaters with that sense of excitement and possibility!

Relativity Media recently commissioned amazing artist Jim Denevan (seen below) to create an experiential sand sculpture at Lucerne Dry Lake (seriously, go to his website and check out Jim’s work- it’s so far beyond incredible!).  So you can imagine how thrilled I was when they invited Lou and I to come check it out!  We roped our friends Jacob + Anne into going with us and left our houses at 3 am to be there for sunrise to watch Jim finish the sculpture.  And then, on a grand adventure of our own, we went up in a helicopter to see the 700,000 sq. ft work of art that Jim and his team had spent the week creating!  It’s the adorable alien “Echo” from the movie, a piece of art that will evaporate in the days to come.  It felt like a dream, lifting up in the helicopter at sunrise and hovering above this giant sand sculpture, with no one except Jim and his team in sight.

What an adventure, right?!  And here’s a video produced by Jacob that I know you’re going to love!  Thank you Relativity Media for creating this magical experience for us!  xx- Sarah

Our Modern Patio Makeover With West Elm

a_house_in_the_hills_modern_patio_makeover-34

Hello Tuesday, and all of you!  I’m so excited to share a bit more of our outdoor space today.  We just tied up all of the loose ends with the patio and our outdoor dining room is officially complete!  I know I shared peeks of the house in this backyard makeover post, but I didn’t share the before photos.  Our house used to be this greenish-grey color which never truly suited our style- so the fresh coat of Benjamin Moore pure white paint was pretty much cause for celebration.  It’s a crazy difference isn’t it?  I was jumping around like a schoolgirl when the paint was going up!

Since the patio was all concrete and stucco we wanted to bring in some organic elements with the potted plants (primarily these, these and these) and the Jardine bar from West Elm. Our amazing pal Ryan from Falling Waters Landscape helped us choose just the right plants- I especially loved his idea to put the tall spiky plants in the tall plant pots!  The Ikea dining table was inexpensive and wonderfully simple.  And the rug from Lulu + Georgia added the perfect graphic element to tie it all together and ground the space!  I kind of got carried away with photos on this one, so there is a so much more after the jump.  (I’m excitable, forgive me!)  What do you think?  It’s a pretty major improvement isn’t it?

a_house_in_the_hills_raspberry_granola-7

Happy Monday everyone, I hope you had a great weekend, I hope you ate delicious things, I hope you had that amazing sleep where you wake up and realize you’re sleeping- then close your eyes to get even more of it, that luxurious feeling.    Today I’m sharing a recipe for the thing I can’t stop eating- raspberry granola!  My favorite breakfast as of late consists of this- this granola, almond milk or coco yogurt and the freshest, sweetest fruit I can get my paws on!   This is the season for all my favorite stone fruits and berries and I’m taking full advantage.  I’m in heaven!  And this raspberry granola adds the perfect amount of crunch.  Lou  says it’s “the best” I’ve ever made.  So there’s that testimonial.  Make it, buy as much stone fruit and berries as you can swing and GO NUTS!!!  xx- Sarah
