Do you know what mends a heart that breaks fifty times a day? Me neither. But these raspberry chocolate hand pies are certainly giving it a good college try. I apologize in advance for what may come of this blog in the next week. Carlos has taken a turn and is in his final days. It feels like he arrived here and his body said “ok, I can start to let go now”. But more on that later. For now, there are these. They’re vegan. They’re delicious, cute, and easy to whip up. And everyone deserves to feel their love. xx- Sarah
Fudgsicles! Fudgsicles! Fudgsicles!
The summer after I graduated high school I worked at a marina in South Portland, Maine as a dockhand. I’ve always said that nothing beats a good summer in Maine and I still think of it as one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. I spent the majority of my days in the dock-house overlooking the marina and ocean waiting for a boat to come in or clients to stop by with questions or to buy supplies. I also ate a fudgsicle every.single.day. They remind me of a time when I thought I knew everything but actually knew nothing. They taste like carefree summer days, in the best way. So here is my {healthier)version- made with only 4 natural ingredients and even more delicious (in my opinion) than the original! Hope you love! xx- Sarah
A HOUSE IN THE HILLS IS LOOKING FOR CONTRIBUTORS!
Happy Friday and happy holiday weekend for my stateside pals! I have some exciting news- I’m looking for contributors interested in sharing their talents with A House in the Hills amazing readers! I’d love to bring even more inspiration to the table and add outside perspectives to the site, all in the genre of what I’m producing already. But I’m open to new angles too, if they’re the right fit. I know you all have so much to share, so much we could all learn from and be inspired by! If you have interest in developing a column for A House in the Hills, please email [email protected] with your ideas, what you envision for your column and samples of your work. Thank you in advance, I’m so looking forward to hearing from you all! xx- Sarah {image via}
CARLOS / MAY 22, 2014
It’s been a week since Carlos, Lou’s father, moved from Florida to live with us here in Palm Springs. As I shared here, he was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer, cancer that has spread throughout his body like a fire. I’ve decided to share bits of this journey we’re on with him here after the response on the last post was so incredible- the way you all opened your hearts to us and shared your stories, it was just so beautiful. And Carlos read through all of the comments. It’s given him a sense of purpose in these last days, to know that I am sharing his story and that positive thoughts and love are spreading because of it. He has such a huge appreciation for what Lou and I do, he loves these photos we’ve taken so much and sees our work as part of his legacy. I don’t think we could ask for much more.
Here’s the first thing I’ve learned in this process: caring for Carlos has been, I imagine, similar to the experience of bringing home a newborn. All of a sudden life seems so much more fragile, we’re consumed with worry, all of our priorities have taken a wild shift to revolve almost exclusively around his comfort and happiness, our hearts have expanded by tenfolds to accommodate this change. I feel like my heart now lives outside my body, on this man whose balance is so fragile, whose happiness and well-being rest in our hands.
We’re getting up throughout the night, so we have the tired weariness of new parents and when I look at Lou I see the exhaustion that I feel. I’m also overwhelmed with love. Watching him care for his father, watching him give him everything he has, it’s one of the most extraordinary things I’ve been lucky enough to witness. And my heart is full for Carlos, a man who is so sweet and full of beauty himself. {more after the jump}
THE PERFECT CARRY-ON: INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT EDITION
I started working on this post a few weeks ago and don’t want to cancel it just because our Bali trip is postponed- I thought it might be super helpful still for those of you who have upcoming travel adventures! I plotted my carry-on for months in preparation for the 30 hours of travel we were facing. I’ve done enough epic plane flights to know that preparedness is EVERYTHING, and ill-preparedness can lead to absolute misery at 30,000 ft! So today I’m breaking down what goes on board the Boeings with me- from everything shown to a few other essentials that I don’t leave the country without. Hope you love!
It all starts with an incredible carry-on bag. This gorgeous specimen of a bag is Lost Property of London via Roztayger, available in black sailcloth as well. (Roztayger also has an amazing travel section on their site, which I LOVE , and offers 10% off when singing up for their mailing list here!) My non-negotiables for a carry-on are as follows: 1.) must have over-the-shoulder-capability 2.) must be large enough to carry my essentials but not so large as to be knocking my fellow passengers in the noggin as I travel down the aisle 3.) must be versatile and beautiful- I want it to look stylish with anything I wear. This one fits the bill perfectly! Now for what goes inside it…. (more after the jump)
