you know what i’m loving today? a dress that costs $41 and makes me feel like a million bucks. i’m not sure what kind of math that is, but it’s the kind i like. you may remember it from here, when i recommended my pal lucy get it to wear to a wedding in bali. lucy, get it. let’s be twins. xx- sarah {more after the jump}
QUESTION: Hi Sarah! I always adore your fashion posts, so I’d love it if you’d help me out with a little conundrum – I love wearing dresses & skirts in the spring and summer, but since I’m often out and about into the night, I like to layer. I’m ridiculously short (5′) so blazers tend to look silly on me with dresses, but I’m quickly tiring of only adding a cardigan on top. Any creative ways to broaden my layer horizons? Thanks! xo, Anni
ANSWER: hi anni! i’ve put together some options… mostly of the cropped variety. you can almost never go wrong with throwing a denim cropped jacket over a dress, but even that needs mixing up every now and then. so i’ve given you some other options too! i love the juxtaposition of feminine dresses with army jackets, so there are a couple of those options (and if you’re 5′ throw on some heels when you’re out and about for the night and you can get away with a longer jacket!). i also included a motorcycle jacket and a less traditional blazer (i think the super short crop would make it workable on your petite frame!) and, if you’re still looking for more options i’ve added some extras in the links below! hope you love! xx- sarah
i’m so excited to finally share some of my photos from tulum, and a few of my recommendations for those who are planning a trip there! what took me so long, you ask? sometimes when i travel i become so consumed with the experience that i have a really hard time getting motivated to photograph. and then i come home and kick myself over all the photos i didn’t take. it all started with a three week trip to thailand in 2001 where i shot only one roll of film. 36 PICTURES IN THREE WEEKS! but i remember that trip still, so vividly, and i think it’s in large part because i was just really soaking it in. i wasn’t consumed with trying to get it on film so i could remember every little detail, i was just IN IT, you know what i mean? so it’s this conflict i have now when i travel, and i struggle with striking a balance. but enough about that…. tulum awaits! {more after the jump}
tulum is a magical little town on the caribbean side of mexico with miles of beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters. the days you spend there are the things postcards are made of. it has a little something for everyone- great places to practice yoga, all the beach and sunshine you could want for a totally relaxing escape, and adventures a plenty for the active vacationer. and the fact that the jungle runs right up to the sea is just really delicious icing on an already perfect cake. i fell in love and dream of a chance to go back.
WHERE TO STAY:
we stayed at ahau tulum, on the recommendation of friends. we loved it for the gorgeous beach, hammocks and cabanas. the hotel restaurant had healthy, satisfying food and decent service. we felt safe and at home there. our room was simple and comfortable, with only a few of the bumps that are often a part of traveling in mexico (spotty electricity and bits of time without hot water). but honestly, none of the small inconveniences fazed us in the least! the hotel management was kind and attentive, the location convenient and if you’re looking for a very bohemian hotel stay, this is the place (meaning plenty of yoga classes, a fair amount of dread locked guests and a perch atop the palm trees to watch the sunset and meditate).
while i loved ahau, next time i’ll check out coqui coqui, which i’ve also heard great things about! we were originally scheduled to stay there but unfortunately they over booked and called us to cancel a few weeks after we made our reservation. still, i’d give them another shot for the perfumery alone!
here are a few photos of ahau, and the beach it sits on!
WHERE TO EAT:
1. hartwood: if i had my way i would have dined at hartwood every single day we were there. i’m not kidding. the freshest local ingredients prepared in the most divine ways with a new menu every day all served in an atmosphere you want to bottle up and take home with you! heaven in tulum, this place. i still think about a salad we ate there, and how flavorful and incredible it was, in spite of the simplest of ingredients. oh hartwood, i will be forever a fan.
2. casa jaguar: such a charming little restaurant with amazing atmosphere and a friendly staff. the food was tasty, my cocktail was perfection, but truly it was the jungle restaurant setting that won me over.
3. el tabano: mexican food! great atmosphere, good food (although the night we were there the only option for a vegan meal was tamales, that were decent but nothing i’d rave about). however i suspect that if you’re a vegetarian or meat eater you could have a really incredible meal there!
i hope you enjoyed my little mini tulum travel guide! xx-sarah
it’s true, i’m cleaning out my closet and we have a good bunch of home decor items that just aren’t working in this space. lots of goodies that i’m hoping are just what you’re missing in your spaces and closets! head on over here to find out more! xx- sarah
hi friends! growing up i was obsessed with nature valley peanut butter granola bars. you know the ones? peanut buttery, flaky goodness. so i set out to create a healthy, non-processed version. and it took me four go-rounds to get a recipe i’m in love with. but let me tell you, even the practice rounds were all scarfed down in a matter of days. these are such a perfect snack to get you by until your next meal, i cannot tell you enough how much of a staple they’ve become in our house! hope you love as much as i do. xx- sarah {more after the jump}
hi everyone! i’ve gotten some requests for an update on my shampoo-free experiment (which has easily transitioned into a way of life) so wanted to take some time to fill you in! first things first: i’m loving it! and since i have naturally curly/wavy hair it’s been great on cutting down the frizz. i finally found that diluting the apple cider vinegar rinse a TON helped tremendously on taking away the intensity of the smell. i still get little whiffs of it when i’m working out, but it’s tolerable. and worth it because the apple cider vinegar really does goes a long way in the detangling department!
i can’t lie, i’ve had some greasy days. mostly due to my love of coconut oil and josie maran’s argan oil and the copious amounts i put all over my body and into the ends of my hair. but a good wash with the baking soda rinse takes it all out! i have to say, i’m happier with the texture of my new shampoo-free hair, although it’s less soft than when i was putting a million and one products in it. but somehow less soft also looks better. and i think it seems healthier and stronger. i’ve been using my mason pearson brush religiously, and i love it! and i find that i can go a couple of days without a rinse, and still have hair i’m happy with. which is ideal because i’m a lazy girl when it comes to beauty!
so there you have it, i’m loving it and not looking back. i think shampoo/conditioner and hair products in general are a thing of the past for me. chime in below if you’ve tried it and have something to share, i’d love to hear! (and if you’re interested, you can read my last progress update here) xx- sarah
