Musings: Share Your Secrets

A_HOUSE_IN_THE_HILLS_SHARE_YOUR_SECRETS

Hello my friends!  I’m excited today to revisit my musings column.  My intention is to write more this year- to touch on the things I’ve learned from struggles I’ve overcome or experiences I’ve had, things that I’m reminding myself of or just random thoughts that have been kicking around in the ol’ brain for awhile!  Today’s Musings post is about the secrets we keep and how sharing them can set you free.

We all have a history- we’ve all done things that we are ashamed of.  We have things about ourselves that we’re embarrassed by, that we don’t share with ANYONE.  And that feeling, that shame, it’s toxic.  It’s the voice in your head that tells you you’re not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough.  It’s the voice that keeps you from feeling like the best self that you already ARE.

Whatever you’ve done, the very worst of it, is forgivable.  Whatever those things are about yourself that you don’t share, that you feel ashamed of- those things don’t define you, they have nothing to do with your value or how lovable you are.  You’re perfectly perfect and wonderful and exactly as you’re meant to be- just as you are.

In my experience, the only way to start believing that, truly believing it, is to share the things you’re terrified to share with the person who you trust most.  And then to keep sharing if possible.  Those secrets feed that negative voice in your head, they perpetuate the myth that there’s something to be ashamed of.  Sharing them forces you to confront that.  It’s not easy work.  It’s terrifying and invites a vulnerability to your sense of self like no other.  But releasing those secrets is a tremendous gift to your spirit.  And the burden of that shame will be lifted, one shared secret at a time.  Challenge your secrets.  Be free.  Love yourself.    xx- Sarah

Sorrel and Potato Leek Soup

a_house_in_the_hills_sorrel_soup_-6

Hello my friends, I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing weekend!  This is a big week for us- we are set to close on our next house on Thursday (please keep us in your thoughts, the loan process with a bank these days is not the easiest process and we’re really hoping they get it together to close in time)!  I’m so excited to share it with you, I have pretty much the same feeling that I do the weeks leading up to Christmas when I just want to give everyone their gifts because it’s torture waiting for the day!  In the meantime, we’re still staying with our friends.  And one of the huge perks of that is that we have access to their gardens and eggs from their chickens!  It’s convinced me that as soon as we’re settled I need to get our own garden going.  There are few things more satisfying to me than walking outside, harvesting some vegetables/herbs/fruits and then preparing a meal with them.  It’s just so incredible!

Now, for this soup!  Sorrel.  I’d never had it before and now I feel like I’ve been missing out my entire life!  If you’ve never had it, you just HAVE to track some down (it’s super easy to grow).  It has this crazy intense lemon flavor and spiciness that is so unique- I want it mixed into my salads, I want to make pesto with it, I want it in all my soups!  This particular soup was the suggestion of our friend, who had stumbled across a similar recipe in a SF farmer’s market cookbook that they think has since gone out of print (if you know the one please let me know so I can properly credit!)  It’s so light but full of flavor.  And the sorrel calms down a bit when paired with the potato and leeks- it just really sings.  As a bonus, it’s super quick to whip up!  Hope you enjoy!  xx- Sarah  {Styling: Hostess Haven}

I love me a great pair of high waisted flare jeans.  Always have, always will.  I think my spirit animal is a hippie. HA!  In other news, things are moving along with the purchase of our house- we’re hoping to close a week from tomorrow!  I can’t wait to get in there and take some photos so I can share the very beginnings of our next home with you!  There are going to be some DIY projects in the works- so if you’re working on fixing up your own homes hopefully our labor/learning will serve as a resource for you!  Ok, have a great Thursday pals!  xx- Sarah

Hey friends, happy Wednesday!  Today I’ve got some style inspiration for you that has me shopping for trousers and blazers!  I’ll never stop loving a good menswear inspired outfit.  Or Diane Keaton. These things I know for sure.  Which of these looks is your favorite?  Mine is the last: a high-waisted wide leg trouser?  YES PLEASE!!!!  Ok, enjoy these.  I’ll be scouring the interwebs in the name of menswear.  xx- Sarah {via 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5}

Cauliflower Quinoa Cakelets

a_house_in_the_hills_cauliflower_cakelets_2015-7

I think I could spend a lifetime coming up with vegetable/grain/legume combos to make into cakelets and fry up- I just LOVE them!  And these guys are no exception.  Plus they’re amazing with Tabasco or chimichurri and I love an excuse to eat either one of those.  In case you love them as much as I do, here are a few blast from the past recipes that you might enjoy as well:  Truffle Salted Purple Potato and Kale Cakes, Asparagus and Corn Cakes, Potato, Leek and Mushroom Cakelets, Chickpea Cakelets with Harissa Aioli.  They’re all so yummy and fun to eat!  I usually serve alongside a big, simple salad.  Hope you love!  xx- Sarah

Inspiring Spaces- Stacy London’s Apartment

stacy_london's-apartment_1

Hello my friends, I hope you had a great weekend!  I’m starting off this week with an inspiring space- in large part because all I can think about is moving into our house and starting the decorating process.  Or at least starting the savings account to decorate process!  HA!  I haven’t shared that many celebrity spaces but this feature via Refinery 29 had my mouth hanging open and I can’t help but share!  I love the mixture of colors, textiles, and most especially- those floors!  When Lou and I build our dream home someday those are the floors that are going in it.  Hope you love it as much as I do!  xx- Sarah
