roasted garlic hummus

i’ve been making hummus that i felt sort of meh about for a long time.  it was good, but for some reason never tasted as good as other people’s hummus.  you know how that happens?  and then…. i decided to try roasting my garlic before i added it.  i know, this isn’t revolutionary.  no one landed on the moon and it was only one giant step for ME, not mankind.  but STILL, i’m pretty excited.  so if you’ve been feeling meh about your own hummus, give this a shot.  and if you have other ideas for hummus i’d love to hear! (another hummus you might love)  more after the jump!

would you ever go shampoo free?

i’m doing something i never thought i’d do, all in the name of mermaid hair!   this article on refinery 29 inspired me, and as of a few days ago i’m going without shampoo and conditioner.  instead i’ll be using a baking soda/water combo and occasionally an apple cider vinegar rinse.  i’m also going to try to stay away from my blow dryer as much as possible.  i love that if this works for me i’ll be simultaneously saving money on expensive hair products (i do tend to splurge in that department), improving the condition of my hair, and making this one area of my life more GREEN!  do you think i’m crazy?  would you ever do it?  specifics about what i’m doing to keep my hair clean after the jump!

BAKING SODA HAIR WASH:

mix one tablespoon baking soda with 1 cup warm water and stir until it’s fully dissolved.  pour into an old shampoo bottle and you’re ready to go!

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR CONDITIONER:

one part apple cider vinegar to one part water  (more info on the benefits of apple cider vinegar in hair here)

**i’ll check back in via the comment section in a few days to let you know how this little experiment is going!

the love of my salad life

it’s been warming up here and i’ve been craving more salads and spring foods.  and nothing tops my salad quite so pretty as these pickled onions!  i add a beet to make them pink (and always regret not making a second batch of just beets, they’re so good and gone within a day!)

if right now you’re picturing a farmhouse and labor intensive pickling process involving boiling jars and sterilization, than you my friend are getting pickling confused with her high maintenance cousin- canning. pickling doesn’t require sterilization or any special tools.  so it’s basically the fastest, easiest way to feel like you’re on top chef with ingredients you likely already have in your cupboard!  {recipe after the jump}

leopard in the desert

lou and i have been out to joshua tree a couple of times this month to explore… it’s such an amazing place! i wore leopard jeans and a marc jacobs scarf for our first adventure, naturally.   and both times my minnetonkas were the perfect shoe to tromp around the desert and practice my bouldering skills.  and by bouldering i mean “scooting down giant rocks on my bum”.  more after the jump!

shop this outfit:  jeans: paige denim (similar here and here), jacket: zara (similar here), shoes: minnetonka (similar), hat: san diego hat company via nordstroms, scarf: marc jacobs
