RV Adventures: Big Sur

I’m happy to finally be sharing our Big Sur adventures!  It’s such a spectacular coastline, and I’d never spent any time there before, only driven through, so I was so excited to set up camp for a few days and explore.  And now I’m so excited that I can bring you all along virtually- I’m sharing our favorite adventures below.  Hope you enjoy!  xx- Sarah

We stayed at Big Sur Campgrounds with a campsite right beside the river in a beautiful grove of redwoods (the light pouring through the trees and filtered through campfire smoke was BANANAS!!)  We took a long walk down the river which was so much fun and next time we’ll drag our chairs down to it and spend an afternoon watching the water go by.  It’s so beautiful and peaceful!  Someone told me that if you follow it for 4 or so miles it ends at the beach.  We didn’t get to see if that’s true on this trip but next time I’m bringing the right kind of footwear and getting to the bottom of that rumor!

There are spots along the windy coastline to pull over to admire the views and take photos, so of course I dragged Mr. Pepito out for a few vacation snaps.  He’s getting big!  And he’s such a great traveler (thankfully!!!).  He has a travel cage in the RV and then he hops around it climbing over any dogs/humans in his way.  And I took him out at the campground each day and let him hop around in the woods.  He was a very happy camper bunny to be munching on fallen redwood trees!

These photos are from a 4.5 mile hike we did on Ewoldson trail.  With lots of tromping through a gorgeous redwood forest AND views of the ocean, it was a dreamy hike.  BUT, by the time we were leaving it was so, so busy.  I recommend going early early in the morning- we had the place mostly to ourselves for so much of the hike and it was especially lovely!  I would not have enjoyed it later in the day, too crowded for my tastes!

After we left the trail we headed down to the beach via a trail we spotted just north of McWay Falls (which is also beautiful and a must-visit!)  You can see this trail from the Highway 1 and cars park along the trailhead, but I’m not sure what it’s called.  The trail splits and one path brings you to the rocky beach above.  It was so great to finally be next to the ocean we’d been staring at for days.  The other path, which we took on the way back, brings you through a cut through in the mountain to a cove that is nothing short of pure magic.  It’s a kelp forest with so much wildlife- we saw more seals than I could even count, an egret standing on the kelp in the water, otters, and a huge variety of birds and fish.  We sat there for what seemed like forever and time stood still.  I could watch kelp swirl in the gently moving water for days.  I highly recommend this little walk down to the coast!

I don’t have any photos of the chocolate croissant we had at Big Sur Bakery, I was too busy shoving it in my mouth to take a photo.  But trust me, you need to have one if you’re in Big Sur.  That should be a law.   Ha!  Seriously though, the bakery is so charming, it’s not to be missed even if chocolate croissants aren’t your jam.

Ok I’ll leave you with one last photo of our fuzziest family member, mid grooming after a romp in the forest.  We’re off to Lake Tahoe today so I’ll be sharing that soon!!!  Thanks so much for coming along on these travel adventures with us!
