Guest Bedroom Update

a_house_in_the_hills_guest_bedroomgoat-1-2

Hola amigos!  It’s been a game of musical rooms around here since we moved in.  What started as my office became our  guest bedroom, and it’ll undergo another transformation before baby arrives.  SO I thought I’d share it before we mix it up again as it’s been such a cozy space for guests!  We planned on outfitting the RV with Parachute Home’s linen bedding, but after the trip was postponed we added it to the guest bedroom for an instant luxury upgrade for guests.  Having slept on it myself a few nights this pregnancy when insomnia had me tossing in our bed, I can tell you it’s heavenly!  As for the rest of the space- we kept it simple with just a few pieces of decor so that our guests would have space for bags and living.  It feels like a cozy little boutique hotel and we’re loving it!  Wanna come for a stay?  It’s a dream of ours to one day open a bed and breakfast- maybe someday we’ll see you there!!  A girl can dream…  xx- Sarah

Pillow Talk

If you’re like me and have a compulsive need to refresh your space, pillows are your best friend. They can transform a room, adding color, texture, warmth or just that last bit of something to make it feel gooooood.  I was being dramatic yesterday when I said they’re more expensive than an organ transplant.  They definitely CAN be, and I have a special skill for always falling in love with THE MOST EXPENSIVE PILLOW MY EYES LAND ON.  But!   I found a bunch of really beautiful, totally affordable options in a pretty exhaustive search this week to share with you. Seriously internet, if there is a corner I left unturned in my pillow hunt, give me a heads up. There are so many of these bad boys that I’d love to mix and match for a look like this.  Oh pillows, I love thee.  Happy decorating my friends!!  xx- Sarah

Dining Room Update

Hi friends!  Do you remember our dining room when we moved in, and then the update last summer when we painted it?  (You can time travel to view it here if you’d like!)  Well since then I’ve been slowly making just a couple of changes- namely in the form of that window seat!  We designed it and had our friend and architect/woodworker extraordinaire build it for us.   He built the floating credenza (seen here) in the living room for us as well and we wanted them to play off of each other since you can see both when you walk in the front door.  I originally intended for the wood to be exposed- no cushion.   I love me a huge slab of walnut something hard.  But after a few months of sore-bum-sitting I broke down and decided that function would have to win out over form this go-round.  We hired an upholsterer to make the seat cushion- and while I love it I do wish it were a couple inches thicker.  I chose to cut costs by having it produced at that thickness and have some regrets, although it’s probably the kind of thing that will only ever bother me as normal humans don’t usually fret about such silly things, right?  SAY YES!  It’ll make me feel better.

I waited patiently (NOT PATIENTLY AT ALL- I NEARLY DIED OF IMPATIENCE) for months until I found the right fabric to make the pillows with.  I’ve since discovered a half dozen throw pillows I would’ve bought and loved as much/more, but again- I saved my pennies by having these made (why on God’s green earth do pillows cost more than organ transplants?!!!)  As for the missing palm on the right side of the room- that was a casualty.  I’m pretty good at keeping plants alive but I have reason to suspect that palms have something against me.  Now that the room is finished (well I do dream of a giant olive tree in one corner truth be told) I have to say- I am so happy with how it turned out!  It’s bright and happy, but at night becomes cozy and downright romantic with the chandelier on a dimmer.  During the day I love sitting in the window nook and watching the kids have sponge fights or play basketball.  The sound of kids playing has become one of my favorites.  Have I told you we live in Pleasantville?  I love it.  I love it far more than I ever knew I would.  Consider me suburbed.  Sources for all that you see below and more photos after the jump!  xx- Sarah

Patio Decorating!

patio_roundup_a_house_in_the_hills

Hi friends!  Summer is going strong here in San Diego and we’ve been spending every minute we can outdoors, the warm nights sitting around chatting with our neighbors until the sun goes down are my favorite!  And I’m thankful for every day that’s not sweltering as my belly grows larger and larger by the second, turning me into a living furnace!  All of this outdoor fun has sparked an obsession with decorating our patio and making it functional for outdoor living.  Right now it’s a blank slate with a table (chairs are TBD), a few plants sans pots, a hammock and these cafe lights strung above the pergola.  But I have dreams!!!  And they involve something like the above….  there are so many cute options for outdoor decorating these days!  I’d love to have an area for lounging- a couch, some chairs, a coffee table.  And of course for us a dining space for entertaining is a must and a place to sit around a fire is a strong bonus.  Lastly, no home of ours is complete without a hammock.  One of life’s most simple and lovely pleasures is, in my humble opinion, hammock lounging.

On another note, do you remember our Palm Springs backyard?  TAKE ME BACK!!!  Except DON’T!!!  Because it’s 1 trillion degrees and the cicadas are probably buzzing like crazy right now.  But I sure do miss that backyard!!!!  Happy Summering my friends!  xx- Sarah

Organic Modern Living Room

Hi friends!  As I mentioned before I’m getting my head around the idea that we’re almost done decorating(we’ve moved houses 5 times in the past 7 years, so I’ve pretty much lived in a constant state of decor shopping).  BUT!!!!!  I’m happy we’re settled and now I’ll pretend decorate.  Hopefully it’ll cure me of my restless decor syndrome (it’s real, the struggle is real!!!) And, I’ve got a collection of clothes I would wear in said pretend room right below it. That’s not crazy, right?  #cantstopmyself Hope you love!  xx- Sarah

Happy Thursday my friends!  We’re nearing the end of decorating….and I’m nowhere near the end of wanting shop for home decor, so I think I’ll have to start decorating other people’s spaces at this point!  I just helped a friend who is refreshing her space and it got me back on the bandwagon.  Here are some pieces I rounded up to fit in the cutest California bungalow!  Hope some of these find their way into your homes.  That will make me feel much better about not adding them to my own cart!  xx- Sarah  {image via My Domaine}
