question: Hi Sarah, I recently lost a bunch of weight and need to invest in a closet makeover. Can you recommend some basics that I can start with and build off of? I’m fairly casual, but want to look put together and would love some ideas on where to start. Thank you! – Best, Erica
answer: hi erica, i’m happy to help! i’ve put together a list of what i consider closet staples, with options below in the links for most of the items. these pieces all provide a great neutral base, and you can play around with your accessories while you build up your closet since those are generally more affordable! think: scarves, hats, shoes, lipstick, jewelry, etc. hope you love what i’ve put together for you! xx- sarah

I love posts like this! I already own some of the things you call closet staples, but still there's some missing I might need to look a little bit more put together. Thanks, this is so helpful!
Great post! Can't wait to complete my closet with some of these pieces. Thanks Sarah!
Love this roundup — the combo of solids and stripes has always been one of my go-tos and I'm learning more and more that investing in staples is so, so important!
Loving that military inspired olive jacket – Great piece!
I love the options you've posted! The striped shirt is a great basic!
Great options! Surprised there are no skirts or dresses. You're such a skirty sister 🙂
Great picks! I'd consider most of these to be staple items! Cute khaki jacket!!…xv

thanks everyone! @ jennifer… i think i'm going to have to do a part II and maybe even part III of this post. because YES, SKIRTS AND DRESSES! plus i didn't get to touch on my love of booties and need for blouses. 🙂
Where is the tote from?
I just purged about 50% of my closet (it was long overdue) and found that I had a lot of clothes that are not basic and versatile. This post is helping me lay out the foundation for my wardrobe… I am purchasing one of the striped tops from Madewell as a good starting point.

these are some seriously awesome options! Yay to that reader for getting healthy and yay for you for putting together this post 🙂
Honestly, for as much as I love fashion I am so wardrobe challenged so this is great, I LOVE rules, makes my chaotic life just a little bit simpler, thanks, I will be employing this.
