DIY Summer Wreath Tutorial: Step-by-Step

Follow this simple step-by-step guide to create your own beautiful summer wreath. No crafting experience needed.

Materials Required

You will require the following to start your project:

  • 18-inch grapevine wreath base
  • Florals of your choice (Fuchsia, bright pinks, tangerines, oranges, and wildflowers)
  • Greenery (Hobby Lobby or similar)
  • Hot glue gun
  • High-quality glue sticks
  • Floral cutters or snips

Step 1. Prepare the Wreath Base

Trim any loose pieces from the front and back of your 18-inch grapevine wreath base using your floral cutters. Ensure the wreath is smooth and ready for decoration.

Step 2. Trim and Prep Greenery

Take your greenery bushes and trim each stem to about 2 inches below where the greenery ends, so that it can be securely anchored into the wreath. Set the trimmed greenery aside.

Step 3. Attach Greenery to the Wreath

Place the greenery in a dry area around the wreath to check the layout. Once satisfied, use the hot glue gun to apply a bead of glue to each stem and press it into the wreath, spacing them about a hand’s width apart around the entire wreath.

Step 4. Prepare and Trim Florals

Trim the pink and orange stems from your floral bush, keeping them separated for easy use. Trim each floral stem about 2 inches below the greenery for easy placement. You will use twice as many pink flowers as orange flowers.

Step 5. Place and Secure Florals

Dry place the pink and orange flowers on the inside, top, and outside of the wreath. Once satisfied with the placement, glue each flower down with the hot glue gun, following a 2:1 pattern with the pink flowers being more frequent.

Step 6. Final Check and Touches

Once all florals and greenery are securely attached, perform a final check to make sure everything is in place. Add any final filler greenery or flowers if necessary.

Storage Tips for Your DIY Summer Wreath

After you’ve completed your beautiful DIY summer wreath, it’s essential to store it properly to keep it looking fresh for the entire season. Here are a few tips for storing your wreath:

  • Store in a cool, dry place: Avoid places that get too hot or humid, as these conditions can cause the flowers and greenery to fade or become brittle.
  • Use a wreath box or bag: To protect your wreath from dust and damage, store it in a large wreath box or a clear plastic bag. This will also help it maintain its shape.
  • Hang it up: If you have the space, consider hanging the wreath on a wall or hook when not in use. This prevents it from getting crushed or squished.
  • Avoid direct sunlight: Keeping your wreath out of direct sunlight will prevent the colors from fading, especially for vibrant flowers.

Final Thoughts

Creating a summer wreath has always been one of my favorite ways to add color and personality to the front of my home, and it’s easier than you might think.

Pick a style that speaks to you and give your front door that fresh, welcoming touch. I recommend storing your wreath properly, too. It’s a small step that’ll help you enjoy it all season long.

No matter your experience level, I’ve found that a handmade wreath brings a kind of personal flair you just don’t get from store-bought versions.
