Lucky Plants For Any Yard or Garden Makeover
Flowers and plants not only look beautiful, but they all have a historical or cultural meaning. Whether you’re green fingered or a complete novice, here are some plants to bring an extra bit of luck to your garden.
Royal Flush
When you take a look at poker hands ranked, you’ll see that the best possible hand is called a Royal Flush, which consists of a ten, jack, queen, king, and ace of the same suit.
This is followed by a Straight Flush, meaning five sequential cards of the same suit – and a Flush, or five non-sequential cards of the same suit, is not far behind. With this in mind, any kind of Flush, and particularly a Royal Flush, is thought of to be a very lucky poker hand.
The plant of its namesake has therefore taken on the same lucky connotations. The pleiospios nelii, or Royal Flush, is a Split Rock hybrid with unique coloring and patterning. This succulent is stemless and almost spherical in shape, with a purple-ish nub in the split center. Each plant can have two to four burgundy leaves which have dark dots across the surface.
In the early spring or autumn, the Royal Flush blooms to reveal a pink and white flower, which is very large considering its size. This flower carries the fragrance of coconut for tropical vibes. The plant requires open, well-draining compost, does well in rock gardens, and doesn’t need much watering.
Marigolds
Marigolds have a variety of different meanings throughout different cultures. For example, in India, they are used for festivals and ceremonies due to their symbolism of success and prosperity, as well as the belief the smell protects against negativity. Similarly, in China, marigolds are used as a symbol of good luck and good fortune thanks to their golden, Sun-like hue.
Whether it is linked to historical cultures like the Romans, to religious connotations between marigolds and ‘Mary’s Gold’ in Christianity, the common thread between all interpretations is that marigolds are an important, lucky flower.
Marigolds do best when planted in well-draining soil, somewhere they will get full, direct sunlight. After planting, keep the soil moist until it experiences growth. Once the plant is established, they only need watering when the soil is fully dry.
Peonies
The peony is by far one of the most popular choices of flower for wedding ceremonies, thanks to its variety in styles and shades to suit everything from minimalist color schemes to vibrant arrangements. But, it’s not just its versatility that has made it a timeless wedding classic – peonies are said to bring good luck.
Due to their popularity for weddings, and their sheer size, this can make them a bit more pricey, so it’s important to take care of them. Flowers can grow to the size of a dinner plate, so support the plants as required.
Peonies can be planted in early Spring, allowing them to bloom through May and June. Some can also be planted in autumn. Herbaceous peonies prefer a neutral or slightly alkaline soil, and need full sunlight to thrive. However, tree peonies prefer more shade and are more adaptable with soil type.
As you can see, there are a wide range of different flowers and plants that can bring good luck to your yard. Whether you love succulents, extravagant blooms, or understated elegance, there are lucky plants to suit all tastes.
